Hard Drive Wind Chimes

In DIY Projects
Windchimestory 1 I used to disassemble hard drives, whenever possible, both to extract the magnets and to see how the different types worked. Different hard drives contain all kinds of wonderful components: voice coil motors, stepper motors, exotic bearings, electropolished machined parts, chemically etched metal webs, flexible circuitry, and my personal favorite: optical quadrature encoders for pivot arm position readout. The drive platters themselves are also quite remarkable: precisely made aluminum patters with a surface not unlike recording tape. The disks make a lovely clear note if you strike them, so it was only natural to make them into a set of wind chimes. -Link [Read More] [Comments]

The Open Prosthetics Project

In DIY Projects

Robots.net points to one of the sites we've been watching take off - The Open Prosthetics Project, the goal is to produce useful innovations in the field of prosthetics and give the designs away for free, here's one of the latest - "Robert Haag has started another interesting project for his son Michael: a prosthetic fishing rod. The idea is to attach the rod as a terminal device on Michael's prosthetic arm in place of the usual gripper. Pretty much anything can be made into a body-powered terminal device by attaching 1/2-20 male threads to it, although it's a little harder to make it do something when you pull the cable. The first stage of the project is to modify the rod so it can be attached as a terminal device." - Link.[Read More] [Comments]

HOW TO - Arduino breadboard shield - $10 & 10 mins

In DIY Projects

Todbot has a short and sweet how-to on making prototyping Arduino bread boards for portable development platforms, he writes - "Do you love Arduino? Do you think the concept of Arduino shields is just the coolest? Do you wish you could get some of those neat Arduino Prototyping Shields that Tom Igoe made? Too bad no one sells them yet, because building your own versions of those boards is a bit out there for us ADD'ers. Don't despair, there is a solution to the lack of breadboarduinos. You can build your own Arduino shield with a solderless breadboard in about 10 minutes and 10 bucks. It's not nearly as full-featured as Tom's prototyping shields, but it's great way to quickly add a solderless breadboard to Arduino. " - Link.[Read More] [Comments]

Granny's Nightmare - HOW TO - Make a bicycle chopper

In fact, the more I looked at the bike, the more I thought it would be a sweet ride. Check out all that chrome, look at that long spindly frame, yeah, I could make this happen... Construction of two Portugese style dinghies (small boats)

In DIY Projects
Fr71Xpqusmepd7R5M1
Tim writes - "After I saw the post - just had to try one. But not just the one sheet of plywood, no, no. Two boats with three sheets of plywood. It's been a project long in the making and I finally had time this weekend to put together my first Instructable. This project covers the construction of two rowboats that are primarily constructed with three sheets of plywood. The design is not mine. I used a design by Hannu Vartiala, a very generous boat enthusiast who has graciously provided boat plans free of charge on his website. This is a step-by-step documentation and explaination of the project found on that site. I've tried to simplify some of Hannu's steps for laymen like myself. You will need to refer to that page as you read this Instructable. I won't repeat Hannu's instructions step by step since this is really his design. I'll just explain how I did it, what problems I ran in to and how I got around them. I found that some of his documentation was vague and some of his working was confusing. This project tool me about 3 days for the first boat and 2 days for the second. I will also include tips for oar construction, which Hannu did not cover in his project. DIY Video game character mosaics

In Art
Fljm3Vygr7Epd7Remi.Medium
Houdini writes - "...Knowing nothing about how to do tiles mosaic and where to by the stuff, I started to do some searchs on google image to find an appropriate drawing to convert into mosaic. With a bit of luck I knew I could find one that will exactly fit my wills : not too small, and not to large. A 25x25 tiles mosaic was my absolute limit as it's already involving 625 tiles. I finally failed in google images, and before starting to convert a bigger image into a smaller one, I did some extra effort to find an original sprite with the size I wanted (pixel design is so well done that I couldn't expect to get the same quality by myself). I finally found the exact 18x18 pixels image I wanted, in a backup of a nintendo GameBoy Advance cartrige. I had to extract the content and one particular design on a splash screen fitted my needs perfectly." - Link.[Read More] [Comments]

Use graphics tablets for music

In Computers

I've been using a tablet for sketching, and also use Electroplankton for the Nintendo DS to make "pen based" music, so it's neat to see that there are applications to turn the big tablet into a musical instrument too, Peter writes - "Whether you're a graphics artist wanting to make music in new ways or just trying to rationalize the purchase of a shiny new Wacom tablet, graphics tablets are worth a look for music control. Open source low-cost real-time eye tracking

Hmet
Brian writes - "As a researcher I see a lot of work done on eye movement recordings and it blows my mind that a device that used to cost upwards of $100, 000 is now in the DIY realm with open-source hardware and software..." "openEyes is an open-source open-hardware toolkit for low-cost real-time eye tracking. The purpose of openEyes is to provide a hardware design and a set of software tools useful for the analysis of eye movement data. The development of openEyes stems from the recognition in the eye tracking and human computer interaction communities that while the cost of hardware for eye tracking has precipitously dropped in the recent past that the there is lack of freely available software to implement even long-established eye-tracking methods. The tools available for this platform include algorithms to measure eye movements from digital videos, techniques to calibrate the eye tracking system, and example software to facilitate real-time eye-tracking application development. The Trackball telescope

In DIY Projects

A ton of Makers sent this telescope in, it's called the trackball telescope and it's public domain, Jerry writes - "...I searched the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office database, and came up blank there, too. As near as I can tell, I have come up with a new design for a mount that not only eliminates the pointing problems of equatorial mounts and Dobsonian mounts, but also tracks. I call it the "trackball" because there's no better name to describe it. Happily, another search of the USPTO database shows that the term "trackball" has fallen into the public domain, so apparently anyone is free to use it as a generic term for this type of telescope. Many people have urged me to patent the design, but I would much rather put it into the public domain so anybody can build (and sell) them as they wish..." When attached to a Windows computer, the UBW will show up as an RS232 Com port! You control the individual I/O pins on the PIC through simple serial commands. Board comes fully tested, preprogrammed, and assembled as shown." - Link.[Read More] [Comments]

Dixie cup spherical dodecahedrons

In Crafts
Fhrhy3K2Zvep2Ll77T.Medium
Here's a fun Instructable on how to make dixie cup spherical dodecahedrons - "The Dixiesphere is composed of twenty spherical-hexagonal 7-cup modular units, which you will construct first. Each hexagonal modular unit consists of seven cups hot-glued together such that one central cup is surrounded tangentially by six more cups. (The spaces between cups will look like equilateral triangles with concave edges, and the circular bases and rims of the cups will look like hexagonal close-packings of circles, but they will posess a slight overall curvature, as the circles define the surfaces of spheres.) It is important that the central cup contacts each of its surrounding six cups at their bases. It's a tight fit getting six cups around a center cup. Work quickly while the glue is hot to ensure that all upper rims and lower bases of the cups are flush, and that there are no superfluous gaps between the bases of the cups." - Link.[Read More] [Comments]

Here's our next TV-B-Gone mod, bam! "This TV-B-Gone uses a 9V battery to send its signal through a matrix of 20 IR LEDS. This extends the working range of the device to about 90ft (line of sight). Using this in a regular sized room you are pretty much guaranteed to kill the TV no matter where you point it." - Link. Related:

Mark VIII keyboard

In DIY Projects
Kif 3518
Russ is working on a really interesting keyboard, check out the different prototypes and build-blog - "This keyboard has no support at the base of the palm. It isn't needed! The keyboard bears directly on the thumb. The main difference between this keyboard, and the others is that the thumb position is lowered. The thumb is now positioned between the index and middle fingers. Most of the bulk of this keyboard is now structural. The kingpin only extends beyond the width of the palm because it's made of cardboard. If it were made of something stronger, it would only need to go 1/4" beyond the palm." - Link.[Read More] [Comments]

Scrollling LED display that reads RSS feeds

In DIY Projects
5X7 Led Matrix With Z8 Encore
A Maker in the forums was looking to make a LED display that can read RSS feeds, here's a start - Atharsia writes - "Check out [this site] for a circuit that can be used to drive a matrix of LED's that can be driven to display alphanumeric characters. You should be able to just string multiple segments together to make a display as many characters long as you want, then you just need to find or write a program that can convert the RSS feed into a single line that can crawl the display... - Link.[Read More] [Comments]

Attaching a kite aerial photography rig to the kite string

In DIY Projects
177038041 6F8E5367Ea
Toc writes - "This is how I attatch my Kite Aerial Photography rig to the kite string. It is just a cheap caribiner I picked up at the local hardware store at the cash register. The string at the top is the kite string and the stings at the bottom are the line from the picavet rig. After the kite is up in the air and flying well I open up the caribiner and make a few turns with the kite line and screw the gate shut. If there is any tension on the line the friction between the line and the caribiner keeps it from sliding down the string. If it is a very light wind day I just add a few more turns. It works pretty very well for me." - Link. Related:
  • Kite Aerial Photography - Puts Your Eye in the Sky. To take pictures from a kite, you need three things: a kite, a camera, and a special rig that attaches the camera to the kiteline and activates the shutter button on the camera. Here's how to do it. MAKE 01 - Page 50 (subscribers).

DIY Fog chiller

In DIY Projects
Dscn7490
Sean writes - "My DIY Fog Chiller was made from things just lying around the house, well in the freezer. I used some icepacks we had in the freezer that can conveniently fold into a triangle shaped tunnel and a mysterious coffee can filled with frozen water to cool off the fog coming out of the machine. I just propped the "ice pack tunnel" up to the appropriate height for the fog machine to shoot fog right through the tunnel. Then put the frozen coffee can at the end of the tunnel for further cooling of the fog." Thanks Mable! - Link & photos.[Read More] [Comments]
