Sensor workshop using the MAKE Controller Kit

In DIY Projects Intefacecontroller1-1
Controller1-1
Here's the first ever sensor workshop using Make Controller Kit - the intensive 4-day workshop offers a hands-on introduction to sensors, sensor interfaces and integration of software and hardware... "Michael Shiloh, Margaret Schedel and Michael Zbyszynski will teach a workshop on how to use the Make Controller Kit to interface to a variety of sensors for musical performance, dance, video, sound, and art installations. Students will learn electronics, how to solder, how to work with sensors, and how to use the Make Controller kit. Cycling '74's Max/MSP/Jitter programming environment will be used for manipulating music and images with the sensor data, and to create reactive environments. In the course of the workshop participants will build a working system which they will take with them. June 29 - July 2, 2006
Workshop Cost: $600
A $200 materials fee, due by June 19, includes the Make Controller Kit and sensors Full details are at www.sensorworkshop.com Margaret Schedel: Women's Audio Mission (www.womensaudiomission.org)

Bike mod - "Your Daddy's in the House"

In DIY Projects 62165924 61C45E47E1
Mypk8 posted up this great modded bicycle - "Created from an old Schwinn tandem - I think it was a Varsity. I cut it up and added a drafting table leg for the down tube. Then filled the holes in with bondo to give it a spine sort of look. I used the triple trees from a purchase on ebay. I removed the stock legs and used some galvanized pipe with wheel mount tabs welded on to really rake it out. Topped off with a spiderweb gusset for that CFL look. If your not at least 6' you'll just have to watch. The bike is actually quite comfortable and it's strong enough to stand up and crank on it to get up hills. Lots of fun." - Link. HOW TO - Garmin eTrex data cable

In DIY Projects Datacable Connection
Jens writes - "I have read your blog entries for GPS data loggers. Instead of getting one of those stand-alone data loggers, I would suggest to get a Garmin e-Trex. This is a standard GPS handheld receiver for outdoor use. They sell for about 100$, collect 10000 data points and run 22 hours on AA cells. And because these have a display and more functions they can also be used for outdoor activities. I wouldn't save those 5$ and get only a data logger with much less functionality. And even better, you can MAKE the data cable yourself. I made one and it is very easy." - Link. Previous:

Build your own trailer lights hookup

In DIY Projects Img413 794
This week's "Gadget Freak" article from Design News shows you how to build your own trailer light hookup - "Trailer rental firms insist that tow vehicles provide operating lights -- turn, tail and brake lights for every towed vehicle rented. Easy to do if the tow vehicle is wired that way, but a pain if it has separate turn and stop lamp circuits. John's solution is a pair of diodes, some quick disconnects and an inexpensive wiring harness. He used Schottky diodes for low- voltage drop, rated 3A to handle 36W of trailer lights. He then threw in a few quick splice connects for the rear tail light wires and the mate to the trailer's 4-Way Flat and was set quicker than he could say "You haul!" Oh, yeah -- be sure the vehicle and tow hitch can handle the trailer, cargo and tongue weight." - Link.[Read More] [Comments]

HOW TO - Linux on obsolete displays

In Computers Img 0804
Bryan writes - "Interfacing older, non VGA displays to systems with VGA hardware without the help of a hardware scan converter- Almost every linux embedded project out there today uses some form of LCD text or graphics display. CRTs have been abandoned as bulky and obsolete. But not all are. Forgotten are the tiny portable b/w televisions you can pickup for almost nothing online or at your local drugstore. These are indeed small, and capable of displaying readable 80x25 text and 640x480 graphics. Best of all is the price, less than $20, often free. No LCD can compete here. Coupled with an equally inexpensive wyse winterm (shown), this linux based system costs a lot less than a crankup laptop or anything you'll ever see at a tradeshow." [via] - Thanks Tom! HOW TO - Build a touchless lightswitch

In DIY Projects 155017953 268E74Bd73
Ryan writes - "Capacitive sensors have historically been regarded with fear and hostility among hobbyists. They're notoriously flaky, unreliable, and difficult to design. Further, they traditionally fall in the "analog domain" which is something the casual microcontroller hobbyist can sometimes wince at. They usually require fancy shielding, and are unsettlingly sensitive to changes in things like temperature, humidity, air pressure, cosmic radition, my girlfriends feelings, and the mushroom kingdom stock market index. I've found lately though that capacitive detection doesn't have to be so scary. With a few simple design rules and a little signal processing, you can do some immensely cool stuff with basically no effort at all. (And as many parts!) This project is just one simple example. There are all sorts of ways you could couple a theremin-like antenna set up with some signal processing to produce fun results. I hope to try more of them!" - Link.[Read More] [Comments]

3D Video microscope

In DIY Projects Scopeimage018
Gerald writes - "Since I saw my first 3D movie, "It Came From Outer Space", in 1953 I've been interested in making my own 3D movies. I got my first 3D camera in 1954, a Bell and Howell Three Dimension Company Colorist, which I still have. I was interested in taking 3D pictures through a Stereo Microscope, but have not seen anything that could do this. The Field Sequential system of 3D movies has brought a new interest in 3D movies. Many of the films originally shown in IMAX theaters are now available in the Field Sequential 3D format. The Field Sequential method of 3D works only on TV screens that use cathode ray tubes (CRT) for the display. It utilizes the two interlaced fields used to display the picture. The TV picture is made up of 525 scanned lines. The screen is scanned twice, once for the odd numbered lines and again for the even numbered lines. These two fields can be separated and one used for the right eye and the other for the left eye of a 3D picture pair." [via] - Link.[Read More] [Comments]

Traditional Kayaks

In DIY Projects Baidarkatwins1
Jim writes - "I am very much enjoying Make 6. I was interested to see another column by George Dyson as well as the article on Steve Roberts. This got me thinking about the design of kayaks and baidarkas through time. George interpreted ancient designs with modern materials. Steve is taking this even further with the inclusion of an entire suite of electronics in a boat whose ancestry can be traced back to traditional kayaks. This brought to mind one of the most prolific makers I know, Harvey Golden. Harvey studies traditional kayaks from museums and sketches and recreates them. He has built a great number of boats and embodies the diy spirit..." - Link. Related:

Make a night-vision webcam

Cbc3Baf9E575C8Aa81B228Da.Medium
Leevonk writes - "Here's how to change your webcam so it can see in the dark. The CCDs of all digital cameras are responsive to infrared light (IR) as well as visible light. However, most webcams come with a filter installed to block out IR light. This makes the image less washed out but it keeps you from being able to see in the dark (using IR illumination)." - Link.[Read More] [Comments]
